If iOS 27 does not appear in Software Update on Monday, or appears and refuses to download, Apple documents two things worth knowing before you touch anything else. The first is that “VPN or proxy connections might prevent your device from contacting the update servers.” The second is that Apple publishes a procedure for deleting a stalled download and starting again.
Both come from Apple’s own pages, and neither involves installing software. iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14 for iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

The four alert messages Apple covers, word for word
Article 108905 quotes the exact strings it addresses. If your screen matches one of these, you are looking at a message Apple has written about, which is more than can be said for most of what an iPhone displays during an update.

The VPN and proxy line almost nobody quotes
Apple’s update article carries the sentence plainly, and it is the single most practical cause on release day. A corporate VPN, a privacy VPN left running from last week, or a proxy profile can leave an iPhone unable to reach Apple’s update servers, and the phone reports it as one of the connectivity alerts above rather than as a VPN problem.
This is also the one to check before anything drastic, because it costs nothing and it is Apple’s own explanation rather than a forum theory. Note that the article, number 118575, is dated December 5, 2025 and names iOS 18 and iOS 26 on the page, so its Settings paths and labels may move when iOS 27 ships.
Apple’s documented fix for a download that stalled
This is Apple’s procedure, from Apple’s page, and it is the most valuable fix in the whole set because a partly downloaded file that will not install is otherwise invisible.
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap the device storage entry for your iPhone.
- Find the update in the list. Apple’s wording is “Tap the update, then tap Delete Update.”
- Go back to Software Update and download it again.
The same article documents freeing space with Offload Unused Apps, and Apple’s separate storage article draws the distinction that decides whether people dare to use it: Offload App “frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data,” while Delete App “removes the app and its related data.” That storage article is also written against iOS 26, screenshots included, so treat the path as provisional on Monday.
One related reassurance from Apple’s update page, since it panics people every year: the updater may temporarily remove apps because it needs the space, and “after installation is complete, those apps are automatically reinstalled.”
If it still will not appear
Apple’s next documented steps are to confirm the device is actually supported, using its own supported-model lists, and then to update from a computer instead. Apple writes: “If the update doesn’t appear on your device, you can use your computer to update your device,” pointing to the Finder on macOS Catalina or later and to iTunes on older Macs or a Windows PC.
Nothing in that path is a download from anyone but Apple. Its escalation continues to the unresponsive-device article and finally recovery mode, and a recovery-mode restore can erase a phone, which is why a backup sits at step one of Apple’s update instructions. What Apple has not said
Apple has not published the iOS 27 download size, a free space requirement, a minimum battery level, a minimum connection speed, or any document covering “Preparing Update” and “Update Requested.” It has also not said whether Monday’s rollout is staged, and it has not published a release time, so a phone that sees nothing while other people are downloading has no published explanation to fall back on.
